Shape, Size & Layout

Concrete is one of the few patio materials that works in any shape. We pour patios from 120 sq ft up to 800+ sq ft. Most NW Indiana homeowners land in the 200-400 sq ft range, which fits a dining table, seating, and a grill station.

Material Comparison

Concrete Patio vs. Other Materials

Concrete vs. Pavers

Concrete costs significantly less than pavers. Concrete also requires less long-term maintenance. Pavers settle, shift, and grow weeds between joints. A properly installed concrete patio with sealed control joints stays flat and weed-free.

Concrete vs. Wood Deck

A concrete patio costs significantly less than a wood deck, and composite decking runs even higher. Decks need staining every 2-3 years and eventual board replacement. Concrete patios sit at grade level, so they do not require railings, height permits, or structural footings.

MaterialMaintenance
Concrete (broom)Reseal every 3-5 years
Concrete (stamped)Reseal every 2-3 years
PaversJoint sand, weed control, re-leveling
Wood DeckStain/seal every 2-3 years, board replacement

Our Process

Our Patio Installation Process

Michael Simko has poured concrete for 28 years. Every patio follows the same proven six-step sequence.

01
1

Site Evaluation & Layout

We visit your property, measure the area, check the grade, and discuss design options. We mark the patio footprint with stakes and string so you can see the actual size before any digging starts.

02
2

Excavation & Grading

We excavate 8-10 inches below finished grade. Proper grading at this stage is critical in Indiana, where heavy spring rains and clay soils create drainage problems. We slope the surface 1/4 inch per foot away from your foundation.

03
3

Compacted Aggregate Base

We lay 4-6 inches of compacted crushed stone under every patio. This base layer prevents settling, manages water drainage, and creates a stable foundation. Skipping the base is the most common reason budget patios crack within a few years.

04
4

Reinforcement

We place rebar or welded wire mesh on chairs throughout the pour area. Reinforcement holds the slab together through Indiana's freeze-thaw cycles, where temperatures can swing 50 degrees in a single week.

05
5

Concrete Pour & Finishing

We pour 4 inches of concrete (not the 3-inch minimum some contractors use) and finish to your chosen style. For stamped patios, we apply color hardener and release agent before pressing the pattern while the concrete is still workable.

06
6

Control Joints & Sealing

We cut control joints at proper intervals to direct any future cracking along planned lines. After curing, we apply a high-quality sealer that protects against moisture, salt, and UV fading.

Project Timeline

Small to medium patios (under 400 sq ft) take 3-5 working days from excavation to sealing. Large or multi-level patios take 5-7 days. Plan for 7-10 additional days of cure time before placing heavy furniture.

Beautiful concrete patio adding value to a Northwest Indiana home
Home Value

Do Concrete Patios Add Value?

Yes. Outdoor living space is one of the higher-ROI improvements you can make. A well-built patio typically returns 40-60% of its cost at resale, and the daily use you get from it makes the math even better.

In NW Indiana's housing market, a finished backyard with a patio, proper drainage, and landscaping signals to buyers that the home has been maintained. It also expands the functional square footage without the cost or permits of an addition.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time of year to pour a concrete patio?

In Indiana, the best windows are April through May and September through October. Concrete cures best between 50-80°F. Summer pours work too, but extreme heat requires extra precautions to prevent the surface from drying too fast. We do not pour when temperatures drop below 40°F or when heavy rain is in the forecast. Our schedule fills up fast in spring, so contact us by February or March to get on the calendar.

Do I need gravel under a concrete patio?

Absolutely. We install 4-6 inches of compacted crushed stone under every patio. The gravel base provides a stable, level surface for the slab, allows water to drain rather than pooling under the concrete, and prevents the clay soils common in Lake and Porter Counties from heaving the slab during freeze-thaw. Contractors who pour directly on dirt produce patios that settle unevenly and crack.

What is the cheapest way to do a concrete patio?

A basic broom-finish patio is the most affordable option that still gives you a durable, professional result. You can keep costs down by choosing a simple rectangular shape, minimizing the distance from the truck to the pour site, and scheduling during our slower months (late fall or early spring). Contact us for a free estimate.

Is it cheaper to do a concrete patio or pavers?

Concrete costs significantly less than pavers. Pavers require additional base material, individual unit placement, and edge restraints. Concrete also requires less long-term maintenance; pavers settle, shift, and grow weeds between joints.

Is it cheaper to pour a concrete patio or build a deck?

Concrete is the more affordable option. Wood decks and composite decking cost significantly more per square foot. Decks also need staining or sealing every 2-3 years. Concrete patios sit at grade level, so they do not require railings, height permits, or structural footings.
