Broom Finish Concrete in NW Indiana
The most common residential concrete finish in the country, and for good reason. A textured broom sweep across fresh concrete gives you reliable traction, a clean look, and a surface that holds up for decades with almost no maintenance.

What Is Broom Finish Concrete?
Broom finish concrete is exactly what it sounds like. After the slab is poured, leveled, and floated smooth, a finisher drags a broom across the surface while the concrete is still workable. The bristles cut shallow grooves into the top layer, creating a textured, slip-resistant surface.
The timing matters. Pull the broom too early and the lines wash out. Wait too long and the bristles skip across hardened concrete without biting in. Getting consistent, even lines across a 400-square-foot driveway takes practice.
The result: A uniform, lightly ridged surface that channels water off the slab instead of letting it pool. You get traction in rain, snow, and ice without needing to add grit or mats.
Why Homeowners Choose Broom Finish
Broom finish is the default for a reason. It checks every practical box most homeowners care about.
Traction & Safety
Broom lines create a non-slip surface that stays grippy in wet and freezing conditions. Critical for sloped driveways and year-round walkways in Indiana.
Most Affordable Option
Broom finish is the most budget-friendly concrete finish available. It saves significantly over stamped on a typical driveway. Put that money toward a larger pour or keep it.
Low Maintenance
No annual sealing required. Rinse with a hose, hit stubborn stains with a pressure washer, and you are done. Stamped finishes need resealing every 2-3 years.
Fast Installation
Without stamping, coloring, or release agents, broom finish pours move faster. A double-car driveway tear-out and replace in 2 days instead of 3-4.
Timeless Appearance
Broom finish never looks dated. No color to fade, no pattern that goes out of style. It fits 1970s ranch homes and new construction alike.
Broom Finish vs. Smooth Concrete
Some homeowners ask about a smooth, troweled finish instead of broom. Here is the honest comparison.
| Factor | Broom Finish | Smooth (Troweled) |
|---|---|---|
| Traction (wet) | High | Low |
| Traction (icy) | Moderate to High | Very Low |
| Appearance | Clean, textured lines | Slick, polished look |
| Best Use | Driveways, walkways, patios | Garage interiors, basement floors |
| Maintenance | Minimal | Minimal |
| Slip Risk | Low | High outdoors |
Our recommendation: Smooth concrete looks sharp indoors. On a garage floor or basement slab, it works well. But outdoors in NW Indiana, a smooth finish becomes a skating rink from November through March. We do not recommend smooth finishes for any exterior flatwork.
Want a cleaner look than standard broom? We can adjust the broom pressure for a finer texture. Lighter passes create shallower grooves that read as smooth from a distance but still provide grip up close.
Broom Finish vs. Decorative Concrete
Broom finish and decorative concrete serve different goals. Neither is universally better.

The Middle Ground
Many of our NW Indiana clients combine both. A broom finish driveway with a stamped border, or a broom finish patio with a colored and stamped walkway leading to it. You get the look where it matters and the savings where it does not.

Our Broom Finish Process
Every broom finish project follows the same proven steps, whether it is a 100-square-foot walkway or a 1,000-square-foot driveway.

Tear-Out
(If replacing)Sawcut the old slab, break it out, haul it away.
Grade & Compact
Level the subgrade and add 4 to 6 inches of compacted gravel for drainage.
Form & Reinforce
Set lumber forms to the correct slope. Place rebar or fiber mesh. Minimum 4-inch slab for walkways/patios, 5-6 inches for driveways.
Pour & Screed
Concrete truck delivers the mix (typically 4,000 PSI for residential). We screed it level across the forms.
Bull Float
Push aggregate down and bring the cream to the top. This creates the smooth base that the broom will texture.
Broom Stroke
Once bleed water evaporates and the surface firms up, we drag the broom in straight, even passes perpendicular to foot traffic or water flow.
Cut Control Joints
Sawcut joints at regular intervals (typically every 8-10 feet) to control where cracks form.
Cure
7 days before foot traffic, 10 days before vehicles. We apply a curing compound to slow moisture loss and improve strength.
Frequently Asked Questions
01How long does broom finish concrete last?
How long does broom finish concrete last?
A properly poured and cured broom finish slab lasts 30 to 40 years in NW Indiana. Thickness, reinforcement, and subbase preparation matter more than the surface finish when it comes to longevity.
02Does broom finish concrete need to be sealed?
Does broom finish concrete need to be sealed?
No. Sealing is optional. Some homeowners seal broom finish to darken the color slightly or make cleanup easier, but it is not required for durability. Stamped and colored finishes need resealing every 2 to 3 years. Broom finish does not.
03Can you change the broom texture from coarse to fine?
Can you change the broom texture from coarse to fine?
Yes. We adjust broom pressure and bristle stiffness to control the depth of the grooves. A heavier pass creates a coarser, more aggressive texture (good for steep driveways). A lighter pass creates a finer, smoother texture that still provides grip.
04Is broom finish the same as brushed concrete?
Is broom finish the same as brushed concrete?
Yes. "Broom finish," "brushed concrete," and "broomed concrete" all refer to the same technique. A broom is dragged across wet concrete to create a textured, slip-resistant surface.
05Can I add color to broom finish concrete?
Can I add color to broom finish concrete?
Yes. Integral color can be mixed into the concrete before the pour. You get the color throughout the slab with the broom texture on top. Contact us for a quote that includes your preferred color option.
